Reader’s Question:

I am a single mom with a 3 year old daughter. I am currently employed and I am made to choose between 2 health insurance companies in Honolulu for my health insurance card. Are there any guidelines that will help me decide which type of health insurance policy is right for me?

Thanks for asking, Tommy.

For me, the most important thing to consider when choosing a health insurance company in Honolulu is the financial stability of the company. You don’t want to end up unable to use up your benefits in the future simply because you insurer has closed down. You also need to check if the insurance company has adequate providers such as doctors, hospitals and diagnostics centers, which offer good and reliable service to their patients. If your insurance company lacks providers, you might end up inconvenienced and unattended especially during emergency situations.

Secondary to these things are the costs and coverage. You have to compare what each company in Honolulu is offering for a health insurance policy. You need to assess further the premium rates, coverage and benefits, convenience in access to after hours and emergency care, out of pocket costs such as co-pays and deductibles, and most importantly exclusions and limitations (which normally come in fine print for most policies). It wouldn’t really matter much whether or not it is a group or individual health insurance policy, as long as you take time to understand the health insurance coverage being offered to you. On top of that, you can compare the benefits each company offers for the protection of your family members, especially since you are a single parent.
